Methodology

How we chose and scored these agencies

Candidate pool. We pulled 4,376 San Diego County marketing, advertising, PR, SEO and design agency listings from Google Maps, Clutch, The Manifest, DesignRush, Built In, Expertise.com, Sortlist, GoodFirms and BBB on September 24, 2026.

Shortlist rules. To be considered, an agency had to meet at least one of the first three rules, plus the last one:

  • Appears on 2 or more of the 17 third-party San Diego “best agency” lists we reviewed, or
  • Named in 5 or more of the 72 AI answers we logged, or
  • Ranked in the top 25 of at least one Clutch San Diego category list (Sept 2026 rankings).
  • Plus: a San Diego County address or a place in Clutch’s San Diego rankings, and a working website on September 24, 2026.

From the qualifying agencies, we hand-picked 25 to cover six specialties. We prioritized the agencies that appear most often across third-party lists and AI answers, and kept agencies from our June edition that still qualified.

Scoring rubric (100 points). Every agency, including Green Flag Digital, is scored with the same formula:

CriterionPointsHow it’s calculated
Clutch verified reviews20Volume: 1–4 reviews = 4, 5–14 = 7, 15–49 = 10, 50–99 = 12, 100+ = 14. Rating: 4.8+ = 6, 4.5–4.79 = 4, lower = 1. No Clutch rating = 0.
Google reviews15Volume: 1–9 = 3, 10–49 = 6, 50–99 = 8, 100+ = 10. Rating: 4.8+ = 5, 4.5–4.79 = 3, lower = 1. No Google rating = 0.
Directory presence101.25 points for each of 9 sources where the agency is listed: Google Maps, Clutch, The Manifest, DesignRush, Built In, Expertise.com, Sortlist, GoodFirms, BBB.
Third-party “best of” lists101.25 points per list, out of 17 San Diego lists that rank for our target searches (Clutch x4, The Manifest x2, Built In x2, Semrush Agencies, Digital Agency Network, Everything-PR, Designity, Growth Marketing Pro, Creatif, themarketingagency.ca, Thervo, Yelp). Capped at 10 (8+ lists).
AI answers10How often ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name the agency across 72 answers to six San Diego agency questions: 1–4 = 3, 5–9 = 5, 10–19 = 7, 20+ = 10.
Specialty fit20The share of the agency’s Clutch service focus in its category’s core services, times 20. Full-service agencies score on breadth instead (8+ Clutch service lines = 20). No Clutch focus data = 5.
San Diego presence10HQ in San Diego County (per Clutch, Google or the agency’s site) = 10. Listed in San Diego rankings but HQ elsewhere = 5.
Pricing transparency5Clutch minimum project size and hourly rate both published = 5, one = 3, neither = 0.

What the score doesn’t measure: work quality, results or fit for your company. It rewards public proof: reviews, listings and third-party mentions. New or referral-only agencies will score lower than they deserve, so use it to shortlist, then talk to references.

Publisher of this list. Scored by the same rules as everyone else.

The agency that publishes this list (see disclosure). Founded in 2015 by Joe Robison, it's a small team (2-9 on Clutch). It builds research-led digital PR campaigns, SEO content and AI-search programs for B2B SaaS and internet-first companies. Clients reviewed on Clutch include moveBuddha, MKP Law Group and Contender Digital. Its published case studies include Upwind (cloud security) and Rustici Software (eLearning).

Why they made the list

Scores 65.2/100: #1 of 4 in B2B SaaS digital PR & AI search, #12 of 25 overall. It earns full marks on specialty fit (all of its Clutch focus is content marketing and SEO, and link earning is half of the SEO work) and on San Diego HQ. It loses points on review volume (5 Clutch reviews, 2 Google reviews) and has no placements on the 17 third-party San Diego lists yet. Its 3.2-point lead over Siege Media comes from the San Diego HQ and specialty criteria. Siege has far more reviews and list placements. Choose GFD for senior, founder-led research campaigns for a B2B SaaS or tech brand. Choose Siege, Power Digital or Ignite if you need a large team or a paid-media-led program.

  • Thrive Agency: Named in 19 AI answers, largely because of its own scored San Diego list. Excluded because Built In lists its HQ in Arlington, TX, and we found no San Diego County address in our data.
  • Formula Marketing: Named in 13 AI answers and rated 5.0 from 34 Google reviews (Morena). It qualifies, but it has no Clutch profile data. It is first in line for the next update.
  • Intero Digital: 4.8 from 147 Clutch reviews. Clutch lists its HQ in Colorado Springs, with a San Diego office in Rancho Bernardo. Under review for the SEO category.
  • KWSM: Named in 8 AI answers, with a San Diego office in Point Loma. Clutch lists its HQ in Aliso Viejo, and it has 2 Clutch reviews.
  • Mindgruve, Vitro, Fidelitas: Each appears on 3–4 third-party lists. We held them back because of thin public review data (2–5 Google or Clutch reviews).
  • Raindrop Agency, 85SIXTY: In our June edition. Neither meets the new shortlist rules (0 third-party lists, few AI mentions, outside Clutch’s San Diego top 25).
  • Inseev Interactive: 5.0 from 21 Clutch reviews. Excluded because its domain (inseev.com) didn’t resolve when we checked on September 24, 2026.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the best marketing agencies in San Diego?

On our 100-point scorecard, Ignite Visibility scores highest overall (98/100). Category leaders: Storm Brain (creative & web, 86.5), Power Digital (paid & performance, 79.5), REQ (PR, 72.2), Blue Media Marketing (SEO, 70.8) and Green Flag Digital, this list’s publisher (B2B SaaS digital PR & AI search, 65.2). The best fit depends on your channel, budget and industry, so compare the category you need.

How much does a marketing agency in San Diego cost?

Clutch data for 803 San Diego-based agencies shows most bill $100–$149 an hour (47% of the 494 that publish a rate), and about a quarter bill $150 or more. Of the agencies that publish a minimum project size, 75% start at $1,000+ or $5,000+. Large integrated agencies set much higher floors: Red Door Interactive lists $100,000+, BOL $50,000+, and REQ and Bop Design $25,000+. Monthly retainers for SEO or digital PR usually land in the low-to-mid five figures.

What are the big 5 marketing agencies?

“Big 5” usually means the five global advertising holding companies: WPP, Omnicom, Publicis Groupe, Interpublic Group (IPG) and Dentsu. Omnicom completed its acquisition of IPG on November 26, 2025, so there are now four. They own hundreds of agency brands, but most San Diego companies hire independent agencies like the ones on this list.

Do I need a local San Diego agency?

Not always. Most agency work is remote now, and several strong options here are headquartered elsewhere (Siege Media in Austin, Breakline in the UK). A local agency helps when you want in-person workshops, local press relationships (San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego Business Journal, Voice of San Diego) or local-search expertise. Our scorecard gives 10 points for a San Diego County HQ and 5 for a San Diego listing with an HQ elsewhere.

What is a digital PR agency?

A digital PR agency creates newsworthy content, such as original data studies, surveys and rankings, and pitches it to journalists. The goal is earned coverage and links from real publications. That coverage builds brand authority, supports SEO, and increasingly shapes which brands AI assistants mention. See how Green Flag Digital approaches digital PR and San Diego PR.

Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

Yes, but the job has widened. In our test, AI assistants mostly recommended agencies that already show up on well-ranked pages, such as Clutch category pages (cited in 39 of 72 answers) and ranking listicles. Classic SEO keeps you on those pages. Answer-engine optimization and digital PR make sure you are named when an AI summarizes them. Budget for both.

How do ChatGPT and other AI assistants decide which agencies to recommend?

Across 72 answers, the patterns were consistent: Clutch rating and review count, repeated appearances on third-party lists, dedicated “[service] agency San Diego” pages, and quantified proof such as awards and named clients. For local questions, ChatGPT also drew on Google Business Profile listings. That is why this list shows those signals for every agency. For your own brand, see digital PR for AI search.

Why is Green Flag Digital on its own list?

Because it is a San Diego agency in one of the categories we cover, and leaving it off would be its own kind of spin. We scored it with the same rubric as everyone else and published the breakdown. It ranks #12 of 25 overall and #1 of 4 in B2B SaaS digital PR, where it leads Siege Media by 3.2 points. Its weak spots are visible: few reviews (5 on Clutch) and no third-party list placements yet.

How often is this list updated?

We re-pull the review, directory and AI-answer data and re-score monthly. Changes are logged at the bottom of the page.
